Green completes West Ham transfer

Green missed a place in England's World Cup squad through injury.

LONDON, England -- West Ham United have signed England international goalkeeper Robert Green from Norwich City on a four-year deal.

Green is recovering from the groin injury he sustained in the build-up to the World Cup, which ruled him out of the squad.

However, the 26-year-old is back in training and passed his medical allowing him to join the east London side on a four-year deal for a fee in the region of million pounds ($3.8m).

Green is West Ham's seventh pre-season signing and manager Alan Pardew is chasing an eighth, with a winger now his top priority.

Pardew said he was delighted to have grabbed Green, who will fight with Northern Ireland and former Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll for a first-team place.

"He already has Premiership experience and is an established member of the England squad, so it is obviously fantastic to have him here in our squad," Pardew told the club's website.

"He still has his best years ahead of him, and we are all excited about what he can bring to the club. He is another young English talent who will be pushing to continue his international career this season, and I am sure he can achieve that aim at West Ham United.

"We now have a stronger pool of goalkeepers than we had last year, with Roy Carroll and Jimmy Walker also competing for the first-team jersey, and it can only be healthy for the squad.

"I've no doubt that Robert will relish that challenge, and it will hopefully take all three goalkeepers to a higher level."

West Ham needed to strengthen their goalkeeping department after Shaka Hislop, who deputised so well when Carroll suffered a back injury last season, moved to US side FC Dallas.

Championship outfit Norwich had already accepted a bid from Charlton but West Ham stepped in to snatch Green from under the noses of their Premiership rivals.

An England squad regular, Green's only cap came when he played the second half of England's 3-2 win over Colombia in New Jersey in May 2005.

He injured his groin while taking a goal kick during an eight-minute substitute appearance in England B's 2-1 defeat to Belarus in May this year.

Green told the West Ham website that he was desperate to get between the goalposts at Upton Park. "I'm delighted to be here," he said. "I'm glad that everything is now sorted and I just can't wait to get started."

"I've been back in full training for around 10 days now and everything is going well, so hopefully I'll be back to full strength and flying again in the next couple of weeks."

Green made 241 appearances for Norwich after coming through the youth system at Carrow Road.
