Johnson is back in the England squad after missing out on the World Cup.

LONDON, England -- Everton striker Andy Johnson has been recalled by England coach Steve McClaren for next month's Euro 2008 Group E qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia.

Johnson, who joined Everton from Crystal Palace in the summer, comes in for the injured Dean Ashton who broke his ankle training with England the day before the friendly with Greece on August 16.

"Andy deserves his chance in this squad after starting the season well with his new club. He's a great lad and a real team player who always gives everything," McClaren said.

"I've spoken to (Everton manager) David Moyes and he's delighted with how well Andy has settled in at Everton."

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick returns after injury but team mate Gary Neville, suffering from a calf injury, along with Chelsea's Joe Cole who has a knee injury, have been left out.

"It's always disappointing to lose someone of Gary's quality and experience. He's an important part of the squad, but we have good cover in Luke Young and Phil Neville who are very capable deputies," added McClaren.

"Joe (Cole) is not quite ready. I've discussed his fitness with (Chelsea manager) Jose Mourinho and there is no point taking any chances."

There was no place for former captain David Beckham who was dropped by McClaren for the Greece match.

England host Andorra at Old Trafford on September 2 and play away against Macedonia four days later.

Goalkeepers: Paul Robinson (Tottenham), Chris Kirkland (Liverpool), Ben Foster (Manchester United)
