Sevilla open cup defense in Greece
MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- Holders Sevilla will launch their trophy defense against Greek side Atromitos following the draw on Friday for the first round of the UEFA Cup. The Spanish side, who defeated Middlesbrough 4-0 in last season's final, will travel to Greece for the first leg on September 14 with the return match two weeks later. "I must confess that I don't know much about them," said Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido, whose team take on Spanish rivals Barcelona in the Super Cup in Monaco later on Friday. "It's an okay draw but we will treat them with all due respect. Greek teams are usually strong physically and tough to play and playing in a Greek stadium is never an easy task," he added Four-time European champions Ajax, dumped from the Champions League by Copenhagen midweek, visit Norwegian outfit IK Start for their first-leg match. Of the English Premiership contingent, Tottenham must overcome Slavia Prague, West Ham face Italy's Palermo, Newcastle are up against the Tallinn side Levadia and Blackburn are paired with Austria's Salzburg. The draw sees two Germany-Denmark encounters, with Hertha Berlin to meet Odense and Eintracht Frankfurt facing Brondby. Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile meet Sion, travelling to Switzerland for the first leg, while Schalke are up against French side Nancy in another attractive match. Schalke are among eight former winners taking part, alongside Sevilla, Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham, Feyenoord and Parma. A total of 80 teams went into the draw for the first-round matches and the 40 teams that emerge victorious will be divided into eight sections of five, with the first group-stage matchdays on October 19. From the middle of February the 24 remaining teams will be joined by the eight teams who finish third in the group stage of the Champions League. The competition will then revert to a knock out system with matches played over two legs. The final will be at Glasgow's Hampden Park on May 16.
