Portugal stunned by superb Denmark

BRONDBY, Denmark -- Martin Jorgensen helped Denmark stun World Cup semifinalists Portugal 4-2 on Friday as both teams warmed up for their opening Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Jorgensen had a hand in two goals and then got on the scoresheet himself to cast doubt on the effectiveness of Portugal coach Luiz Flipe Scolari's defensive tactics.

Jon Dahl Tomasson opened the scoring after 14 minutes when Jorgensen found Dennis Rommedahl to set up the chance.

However, two minutes later Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho equalised when he powered the ball into the roof of the net.

Thomas Kahlenberg restored Denmark's lead after 21 minutes by firing under goalkeeper Ricardo Pereira after Jorgensen had again shown his magic by conjuring up a precise cross.

With Barcelona midfielder Deco rested and stalwarts Luis Figo and Pauleta having retired from international football, Portugal had to rely on youngsters such as debutant Luis Nani of Sporting and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo wasted a glorious opportunity to bring Portugal level again when his penalty was saved by Thomas Sorensen just before the hour mark and the vistors had to wait until defender Carvalho popped up to score his second in the 65th.

Denmark refused to give up though and Jorgensen capped a fine display by firing home between Ricardo's legs before substitute Nicklas Bendtner wrapped up the win in added time.

"Martin Jorgensen and Thomas Kahlenberg were constantly on the move and that gave the Portuguese midfield and defence a lot of problems," said Denmark coach Morten Olsen.

Denmark travel to Iceland for their first Group F match on Wednesday hoping to challenge favourites Spain and Sweden for a place at Euro 2008 being hosted by Austria and Switzerland.

Portugal coach Scolari knows he has work to do before their first qualifier saying: "I was a little disappointed with our defensive play but that's normal with new faces."

Portugal, who visit Finland in Group A also on Wednesday, are favorites to reach the finals with Serbia but will be pushed hard by Poland, Belgium and the Finns.
