LONDON, England -- Former England midfielder Paul Ince has been named player-manager of Macclesfield Town, the struggling League Two club said on Monday. Macclesfield, who are bottom of the old fourth division without a win all season, said Ince had signed a 14-month contract with a six-month rolling contract to be agreed later. Ince, 40, whose clubs include Manchester United and Inter Milan, will not be eligible to play for the club until the transfer window reopens in January. Ince made his name at West Ham United as a tough-tackling midfielder before moving to Old Trafford in 1989 where he helped United to end a 26-year title drought by winning the newly-formed Premier League in 1992-93. After more than 200 appearances for United Ince had spells with Inter, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was capped 53 times for his country and in a match against the United States in 1993 became the first black player to captain England. Ince will take charge of his first game for Macclesfield at home to Mansfield on Saturday. ![]() Player-manager Ince will attempt to point Macclesfield in the right direction. |
