PARIS, France -- A first-half goal by teenage midfielder Serge Gakpe and a penalty by Camel Meriem helped 10-man Monaco to a 4-0 victory at Troyes on Sunday and lifted them out of the Ligue 1 relegation zone. Gakpe, set up by Czech Republic midfielder Jaroslav Plasil, slotted the ball past goalkeeper Kevin Grau to open the scoring in the 20th minute. Monaco were reduced to 10 men after 32 minutes when striker Diego Perez was sent off for handling. Playmaker Meriem made it 2-0 from the spot in the 73rd and striker Yaya Toure sealed his side's first away success since the start of the season with a late effort. Italian Marco Di Vaio completed the rout during injury time. Monaco, bottom of the 20-club table before the game, moved up to 17th, level on points with Nantes who were held to a 2-2 draw at home by St Etienne on Saturday. It was Monaco's third league victory of the season, their most convincing so far and their first for a month and a half. Promoted Troyes slumped to 19th place in the standings, one point above Sedan. Lille stepped into second place in the table, a remote 10 points adrift of Lyon, after Mathieu Bodmer's 45th minute goal gave them a 1-0 home win over Marseille. ![]() Perez left Monaco with plenty to do after his 32nd minute sending-off. |
