Lehman misses Euro match with cold

BERLIN, Germany -- Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will miss Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier away to Cyprus on Wednesday because of a heavy cold, while midfielders Bernd Schneider and Piotr Trochowski are doubtful with injuries.

Lehmann's illness forced him to miss Arsenal's 3-0 league win against Liverpool on Sunday. After speaking with coach Joachim Loew by phone he pulled out of the squad.

The German Football Association (DFB) said on Sunday that Robert Enke would take his place in the squad.

Timo Hildebrand of new Bundesliga leaders VfB Stuttgart is expected to start the match.

Loew has two other main concerns ahead of Germany's fourth Group D qualifier.

The experienced Schneider had to be substituted after 71 minutes of Bayer Leverkusen's 3-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich on Saturday because of a leg muscle strain.

Trochowski, who made a promising debut in last month's 2-0 win over Georgia, suffered an Achilles injury in Hamburg SV's 1-1 draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.

The two midfielders joined their international team mates in Frankfurt on Sunday but may not travel for the match, according to the DFB.

Germany have maximum points from three games in qualifying against Ireland, San Marino and Slovakia.

England blows

England lost four more players to injury Sunday -- striker Darren Bent, midfielders Stewart Downing and Scott Parker, and defender Ledley King.

The World Cup quarterfinalists, who face the Netherlands on Wednesday in an international friendly, also will be without defender Gary Neville and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Neville aggravated a calf injury in Manchester United's 1-0 win over Blackburn on Saturday, while Kirkland has been given a leave of absence because his wife is to give birth to the couple's first child this week.

England coach Steve McClaren has decided not to call any replacements to his squad, leaving Paul Robinson and Ben Foster as the only goalkeepers.

Neville's injury means that Micah Richards could become the youngest defender to play for England.

Both Downing and Parker picked up groin injuries this weekend, leaving Joe Cole as likely starter on the left side of the midfield.

Cole has not yet played since McClaren replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson after the World Cup, but he has recovered from his knee injury.

Bent's hamstring injury should allow Andrew Johnson to get some playing time, likely as a substitute for either Wayne Rooney or Peter Crouch.

King decided to pull out of the squad because of his ailing knee.

Uncapped pair in Italy squad

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has included uncapped duo Alberto Aquilani and Cristian Brocchi in his 20-man squad for Wednesday's friendly against Turkey in Bergamo.

Donadoni's choices were limited by injuries to several of Italy's regulars, including midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Simone Perrotta, and strikers Alessandro Del Piero, Luca Toni and David Di Michele.

There were first call-ups for AS Roma midfielder Aquilani and Milan midfielder Brocchi, who both gave lively performances in Roma's 2-1 win over Milan at the San Siro on Saturday.

There was also a return for Milan striker Alberto Gilardino, who was part of Italy's World Cup-winning squad, but whose slow start to the season led to him being left out by Donadoni for the Azzurri's last two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Ukraine and Georgia.
