VALENCIA, Spain -- Atletico Madrid reached the last 16 of the Spanish Cup on Wednesday, beating Levante 1-0 in the second leg of their fourth round match before prevailing 4-2 on penalties. Substitute Sergio Aguero scored two minutes into injury time and then converted the decisive penalty at Levante's Ciutat de Valencia stadium following misses by the home side's Olivier Kapo and Ze Maria. Aguero's goal equalized the aggregate after Levante won the first leg 1-0 in October. Atletico, who last won the competition in 1996, made little impression until the 88th minute when captain Fernando Torres hit the post from just outside the penalty area. The visitors looked on their way out until when Aguero forced extra time by beating Ze Maria and angling home a low shot. Levante were stronger in extra time, and had a goal ruled out for handball, but were unable to see off the visitors. The second leg was initially scheduled for November 7 but was postponed due to the poor state of the pitch. Atletico, nine-times Cup winners, meet 2005 finalists Osasuna in the next round over two legs on January 10 and 17. |
