If you're on a sightseeing trip to Rome, it's worth getting up early to beat the queues. Consider investing in the Roma Archeologia Card, which costs 20 euros and includes the entrance to nine major sites, including the Coliseum, or schedule your trip for April when museums and places of interest open free during the week-long Settimana dei Beni festival.

For listings of what's happening in the city, look out for the English-language magazine Wanted in Roma, which hits the streets every two weeks. The online What's on in Rome

offers a useful up-to-date guide to events, festivals and exhibitions.

Coffee and ice cream are two of the best reasons for visiting Rome, but watch out for the pitfalls. When buying gelati, take a look at the container it's served out of. Steer clear of plastic tubs and go for aluminum or stainless steel, it's usually more hygienic. Aficionados recommend checking out the banana flavor -- a gray color is good and will usually mean the rest of the gelati is up to scratch. When buying coffee, be aware that most cafes have two prices: one for standing and a much more expensive one for sitting.

For a taste of real Roma, try checking out one of the back street enotecas or bottle shops. Traditionally a meeting place for men stopping off for a drink on the way home for work, these are great place to escape the tourist hordes and mix with the locals.
