Fiery collision of planes kills 3Crash scatters debris across California neighborhood
(CNN) -- Three people died when two small planes collided and burst into flames late Wednesday afternoon between El Cajon and La Mesa, east of San Diego, strewing debris over several residential blocks, authorities said. El Cajon Fire Chief Mike Scott said two bodies were recovered where one of the aircraft crashed in a park, and a third was found at a house where the plane crashed through the roof, starting a fire in the attic. Scott said the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. No one was inside the house at the time. The aircraft landed less than a half-mile apart, he said. Video showed holes in the house's roof, apparently from burning wreckage. The crash occurred about 4:40 p.m. (7:40 p.m. ET). Scott said residents were evacuated to a school so police from both cities could search the neighborhood for debris. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to arrive overnight. Monica Zech, a public information officer for El Cajon Fire and Police, said the planes were a 182 Cessna and a 172 SG, an experimental plane made in Scandinavia. The latter was was initially identified as a helicopter, but its tail number revealed it later to be a fixed-wing, experimental plane, she said. "They look kinda funky."
