(CNN) -- A Greyhound bus overturned Monday evening on Interstate 87 in upstate New York, killing at least five passengers and injuring numerous others, according to Ray Thatcher with Essex County Emergency Services.

It's unclear what caused the accident, but the bus veered off the highway and flipped over at least once, according to New York State Police Trooper Ryan Bentley. The bus was headed from New York City to Montreal and had just made a stop in Saratoga Springs prior to the accident.

The bus was carrying 52 passengers and the driver, according to Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmnsbee. (Watch rescuers remove bodies, victims and children -- 1:30)
