(CNN) -- As part of an upcoming "CNN Presents" special investigation on Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, CNN.com asked readers to share their thoughts on whether he should stay on or resign. Here is a selection of the responses, some of which have been edited. For more on the documentary, click here.

Donald Rumsfeld is doing better than expected. That is, if you were expecting the end of the world.
Jeff Davidson, Hancock, Maine

I think Rumsfeld is doing a wonderful job, no thanks to the media that keeps "leaking" vital security material. He needs to stay. We need to stay in this war and win and not cut and run. What better alternative can you liberals suggest?
Liz Pfeil, Hilton Head, South Carolina

Donald Rumsfeld and his neocon buddies should have resigned long ago. They were wrong to get us into this war and are guilty of gross mismanagement. If we do not leave under our own power, we will be forced out by events. Reminds me of a quote from MacBeth: "I am in blood stepp'd in so far that should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er."
Stephen Mitchell, Poughkeepsie, New York

The gentleman is near total incompetence in this position. His arrogance and hubris are astounding. Then again, he does match the president in those qualities.
Robert Dey, Montague, New Jersey

I think Donald Rumsfeld has no business running a boy scout troop, much less the Department of Defense. This entire administration is doing great harm to our armed forces. As a former Marine, I am glad I am not serving under this so-called leadership.
Ken Roth, Monroe, North Carolina

I am someone who has voted twice for Bush and believe we should have gone to war with Iraq. I also believe that Bush's blind loyalty to Rumsfeld is the reason this conflict has turned into a circus. We have the most powerful military in the history of the planet, this should not be happening. ... Mr. Bush, why don't you listen to Colin Powell?
Mike, Santa Barbara, California

I don't blame Rumsfeld completely. His plans of attack in Afghanastan and Iraq were brilliant and won the battles handily. But there was no plan for an occupation after that. Bush went to war with rose-colored glasses and consequently made things almost immeasurably worse. The shame was that it was completely foreseeable. The entire administration should resign, not just Rumsfeld. This war in Iraq is an unmitigated disaster.
John Mayes, Knoxville, Tennessee

Secretary Rumsfeld should stay. There are two years left in the Bush presidency and there would be few qualified people to take his place who could actually make a difference in that time. More importantly, the devil you know is sometimes better than the devil you don't.
Jason Hessler, Elkhart, Indiana

I think he's performed excellently. Not to say he hasn't made mistakes. But his unshakable love for his country and his thoroughness and amazing energy -- considering his age -- make him, I feel, the best Defense Secretary you fine Americans have ever had.
Adrian Fratoni, Hamilton, Canada

He should resign. Then he should go through boot camp training and be shipped to Iraq to fight.
John D.Crowley, Hartford, Connecticut
