BOYNTON BEACH, Florida (CNN) -- One person was fatally shot and three others were in custody Sunday at the Boynton Beach Mall, north of Fort Lauderdale, police said. The mall, packed on the day before Christmas, was evacuated, and a SWAT team entered the shopping area, said Maj. Frank Briganti of the Boynton Beach Police Department. "The suspect ran through the mall and began to fire at officers as they were chasing him through the mall," said Boynton Beach Police Lt. Jeffrey Katz. Briganti said that the shooter likely targeted the victim. Asked the motive, Briganti said, "It's way too early to tell." The 23-acre mall, located just west of I-95, features a Macy's, Dillard's, JCPenney and Sears, and more than 135 specialty stores and eateries. "To the best of my knowledge, the shooting was outside of a store but inside the mall property," said Sam Yates, a mall spokesman. |
