Taliban suicide attack kills 10
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded area of Tarin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, killing 10 Afghans and wounding 50 others, a provincial deputy governor said. Two of the dead were children, and 15 of the wounded had serious injuries, Uruzgan Deputy Governor Haji Abdul Aziz said. The Taliban has claimed responsibility and identified the attacker as Abdul Rahim. He was carrying bombs strapped to his chest, a Taliban spokesman said. The attack happened around 11:30 a.m. local time, as people flocked to stores to buy gifts for the upcoming Eid holiday. U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ronald Neumann and other embassy officials were about half a mile away and are safe, U.S. Embassy spokesman Lou Finter said. Neumann was attending a meeting with provincial tribal leaders at the governor's compound, Aziz said. There were no U.S. casualties, a U.S. military spokesman said, and U.S. troops were investigating and providing medical assistance. The Taliban claimed that 15 people were killed, including Afghan police and international troops, and that 20 to 30 Afghan government officials were wounded. Tirin Kot is in Afghanistan's south-central Uruzgan province, which has seen a string of roadside and suicide bombings in recent months. CNN's Becky Diamond and journalist Ruhullah Khapalwak contributed to this report.
