DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) -- A six-story building housing a garment factory collapsed Saturday in Dhaka, Bangladesh Saturday, killing at least 18 people, seriously injuring more than 50 and trapping more than 300, fire officials said.

Most of the missing in the factory -- called Phoenix Textile -- are women, a police official said.

The collapse occurred in the heavily industrial Tejgaon section of the city at about 11 a.m. (0500 GMT), and authorities called in the army to lead the rescue effort.

A hospital was under construction in part of the brick building, which was only a year or two old and housed offices and shops on its ground floor.

There was no immediate world on what could have caused the collapse.

Construction workers were adding a new story to the building when it fell, a rescue worker told The Associated Press.

A garment factory had recently moved out of the building, and it was under renovation to house a medical center, a local resident told the AP.

The collapse came two days after a fire at a textile mill killed at least 54 workers and wounded dozens in southeastern Chittagong city, 135 miles southeast of Dhaka.

Journalist Tasneem Khalil contributed to this story.
