![]() Canadian soldiers look over the scene of a traffic accident in Kandahar earlier this month. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS(CNN) -- A Canadian soldier shot and killed a passenger in a vehicle after the driver failed to respond to signals to stay away from a military patrol near Kandahar, Afghanistan, Canadian forces said Wednesday. The vehicle, described as a three-wheeled motorcycle being used as a taxi, approached the Canadians on Tuesday night after failing to heed warnings from an Afghan national police checkpoint. After the driver failed to respond to spotlights, verbal warnings and hand gestures to stay away from the Canadians, a soldier fired shots at the front of the vehicle, the Canadian military said. A passenger in the vehicle was treated for wounds at the scene but died later at a hospital. An investigation is under way. Residents of Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, have been reminded not to drive close to coalition personnel, who are wary of the threat of suicide bombings. Earlier this month, two Canadian soldiers died in a crash near Kandahar, and others have been injured in attacks, including five in a suicide bomb attack on March 3. (Full story) The two fatalities are among 10 Canadian deaths in the Afghan conflict. More than 2,200 Canadian soldiers are based in and around Kandahar. On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Canadian forces in Afghanistan and praised their effort. "Your work, serving in this U.N.-mandated, Canadian-led security operation, follows in the proud Canadian tradition of providing leadership on global issues and protecting our national interests," Harper said.
