SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- A shootout between suspected militants and security forces in a northern Kashmiri village has left five people dead, a police official said.

An Indian soldier, a police officer and three militants died in Wednesday's shootout.

It was the latest report of violence in the region. Earlier this week at least 35 Hindus were killed in two separate incidents. (Full story)

The standoff began shortly after militants were spotted near the village of Hayan late Tuesday, about 25 miles (42 kilometers) north of the summer capital of Srinagar, said Farooq Ahmad, the deputy inspector general of police for the central Kashmir range.

"Troops of Rashtriya Rifles (an anti-insurgency army unit) and local police were quickly moved to cordon the two residential houses were the militants had been hiding," Farooq said. "The holed up militants tossed grenades and fired from their automatics on the surrounding troops."

The homes were destroyed in the firefight, according to Farooq.

The bloody encounter came as leaders of a moderate Kashmiri separatist group, the Hurriyat Conference, are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi Wednesday to discuss the peace process in the restive region ahead of a roundtable conference later this month.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over the disputed region of Kashmir, but they have been holding talks since 2004 to resolve it.

The two nations, which both claim Kashmir in its entirety, have been observing a cease-fire along the Line of Control dividing Kashmir between them since November 2003.
