Singer's missing boyfriend 'seen'

YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS(CNN) -- The missing boyfriend of Australian singer Olivia Newton-John may be alive and living in Mexico, according to a report in a Sydney newspaper, the Daily Telegraph. Patrick McDermott, 48, who had been the "Grease" star's boyfriend for nine years, disappeared in June last year. He was reported to have fallen overboard while on the fishing boat Freedom, which made an overnight trip out of San Pedro in Los Angeles. But according to an account in the Daily Telegraph, it found three separate witnesses in Mexico's Baja Peninsula who had seen McDermott in the past three months. One of the sightings was as recent as May 26 in a bar in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas, it said in a report Monday. The newspaper said there was speculation that McDermott may have attempted to fake his death to escape mounting debts and a possible jail term over unpaid child support for his son Chance from his marriage to actress Yvett Nipar. It said the fishing boat Freedom made a previously unknown stop for fuel that would have allowed McDermott to leave the vessel. In August last year, Newton-John and the U.S. Coast Guard sought the public's help in finding McDermott. "As you are all now aware, my dear friend Patrick McDermott, who I love very much, is missing," Newton-John said in a statement on August 22. "He was last seen on a charter fishing boat on June 30. Out of respect for his family, I have chosen not to make any public statements until now. For those of us who know and love him, it has been a truly heart-breaking experience and we have chosen to deal with it privately. "I have offered my full cooperation to the authorities who are continuing to investigate the circumstances of his disappearance," she said,"and we are hopeful that eventually we will find some answers." Over a 30-year singing career, Newton-John has had international hits such as "Physical," "Magic" and "I Honestly Love You." But she first became famous after starring in the movie "Grease" with John Travolta.
