U.S. military probes soldier's death

(CNN) -- The Pentagon is investigating a U.S. soldier's death in Afghanistan as a possible friendly fire incident.

Pfc. Justin R. Davis, 19, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, was killed Tuesday in Korengal Outpost, near Kunar province.

A Pentagon statement said "he came in contact with indirect fire while on patrol during combat operations."

Davis had been assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) of Fort Drum, New York.

The most well-known incident of a friendly fire incident was the death of Cpl. Pat Tillman, who gave up a multimillion-dollar pro football deal to enlist as an elite Army Ranger. He was hit in the head by three bullets fired by U.S. soldiers who say they mistook him for the enemy. (Details)
