LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- A prominent Shiite leader has been killed in a suicide bombing near his home, police said.

The bomber detonated as Hassan Tarabi was leaving his home in the Abbas Town neighborhood of Karachi, authorities said Friday.

The killing prompted a security alert in Lahore and Karachi.

Tarabi addressed a rally condemning Israel and the United States three hours before he was attacked.

Tarabi's nephew and a police guard -- as well as the bomber -- were also killed.

The situation at the scene was described as tense. Police have cordoned off the area.

CNN's Syed Mohsin Naqvi contributed to this report.
