Afghan forces kill 18 Taliban
SPECIAL REPORTYOUR E-MAIL ALERTS(CNN) -- Afghan troops and police have killed 18 Taliban insurgents, most of them in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry said Saturday. Yousuf Stanakzai said the militants died in two of several raids carried out Friday. Fourteen of the Taliban were killed during a raid by Afghan and coalition forces and police in the Garmser district. Coalition spokesman Col. Tom Collins said the operation lasted 12 hours. Stanakzai said the other four Taliban were killed during a three-hour battle north of the Afghan capital of Kabul after they attacked a police post. One policeman died and four others were wounded in that fight. In two separate incidents Friday, Afghan police arrested 13 Taliban in Garmser district near the area of Babajee, and arrested two Taliban armed with AK47s, he said. Afghan and coalition forces, backed by police, have been carrying out Operation Mountain Thrust in southern Afghanistan, an effort to prevent the Taliban from regaining a foothold in the country they once ruled. Areas of highest concern are northern Kandahar, northern Helmand and Oruzgan provinces. Earlier this month, Afghan and other forces seized control of two southern Afghan communities in Helmand province the Taliban said they held. Journalist Tom Coghlan contributed to this report
