KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Four Canadian soldiers were killed and 10 wounded near the southern Afghan city of Kandahar in three incidents Thursday, while 21 civilians were killed by a suicide bomb in the same area, NATO military officials said.

Suspected Taliban insurgents used rocket-propelled grenades to ambush a NATO patrol in the village of Pashmul, killing three Canadian soldiers and wounding six Thursday afternoon, not far from where a roadside bomb killed another Canadian soldier and wounded one Thursday morning, NATO said.

Three hours later, another roadside bomb wounded three Canadian troops, NATO said.

The soldiers killed in the afternoon attack have not been identified. The soldier killed in the morning is Cpl. Christopher Jonathan Reid, a NATO official said.

A NATO military convoy narrowly missed another attack in the early afternoon when a suicide car bomber struck a market in Kandahar's Punjwai district center, according to Canadian Army spokesman Maj. Quentin Innes, a representative from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

"There was no damage to the convoy or ISAF personnel. It is not clear at this stage whether the bomber was targeting the people in the village or whether he was trying to get close to the convoy and detonated prematurely, which does happen," Innes said.

The Kandahar governor's office and the federal Interior Ministry said 21 civilians were killed and 13 were wounded in that market attack.
