Japan protests after Russia firingTokyo calls in diplomat to protest incident in disputed waters
![]() Russia's acting ambassador in Tokyo, Mikhail Y. Galuzin, leaves the Japanese Foreign Ministry Wednesday. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSTOKYO, Japan (CNN) -- Japan is lodging a "strong protest" with Moscow after Russian border security guards fired on a Japanese crab boat in disputed waters, killing a fisherman. The Russian patrol fired on the boat off the shore of Kaigara Island, the Japanese Coast Guard said. Kaigara is one of several islands in northern Japan that has been disputed between the two nations, but incidents such as Wednesday's shooting are rare. The fisherman's boat was captured by the Russian guards and taken to another nearby island, Kunashiri, the Japanese Coast Guard said. Japan's foreign ministry is demanding Russia return the fishing boat and its crew. In confirming the death of the fisherman, the Russia embassy said three other members of the crew were safe. Japan's foreign ministry called in acting Russian ambassador Mikhail Galuzin to protest the incident. Chikahito Harada, the director of European affairs for the Foreign Ministry, said it is "unacceptable" that the Japanese ship was captured on the water near the northern islands Tokyo claims sovereignty over. Harada asked for humane treatment for injured and called for the immediate release of the ship and crew members. He also said that Japan has a right to claim the compensation for any damage.
