Chemistry school blast kills woman
PARIS, France (CNN) -- An explosion at a French chemistry college has killed a professor and seriously injured one other person. French rescuers said initially 15 to 20 people were missing but they were later accounted for. Classes were in session at the time of the explosion around 12:25 p.m. Friday on the second floor of a three-story building. Officials said the cause of the blast was still unknown. Rescue officials said one woman, a professor, was pulled from the building and later died. The condition of second person, initially described as lightly hurt, was later downgraded and was in serious condition. Earlier, rescuers said they had evacuated 150 people from the three-story building. Thick black smoke could be seen pouring from the structure after the blast, but officials said there was no fear of the release of toxic substances. Eyewitnesses described their shock at the explosion. "We thought it was an earthquake," a local resident identified as Jean-Pierre Langer told TF1 television. "It really shook."
