'Terrorist cell' arrests in Italy
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSROME, Italy (CNN) -- In a series of morning raids, Italian military police arrested five Algerians for their alleged affiliation with a terrorist group, authorities said Friday. According to the Italian Carabinieri, investigators discovered a cell linked to an Algerian militant organization known as the "Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC)," whose logistical base was in Vicenza, but also had operations in Brescia, Naples and Salerno. According to authorities, the group is part of a "global jihad" recruitment program that is also involved in the production of counterfeit documents, including false IDs, living permits and work contracts to be used by illegal immigrants. The arrests were made in the cities of Vicenza, Brescia and Reggio Emilia and follow the midweek arrests of three men with alleged ties to the same militant organization. The three are being held on suspicion of association with the aim of international terrorism -- charges put in place after the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. In the past, Italy has been used as a logistical base for groups tied to al Qaeda, providing false documents and financial assistance for terrorist activities. If the suspects were planning to carry out terrorist attacks in Italy, it would mark an escalation in terrorist activities in the country. Italy has been the target of Internet threats by Islamic militants because of Rome's support of the U.S.-led military operation in Iraq, with about 3,000 Italian troops taking part in the coalition.
