Six of the bestWhat the expert says about Britain's best beersBy CNN's Barry Neild ![]() Might Oak's Oscar Wilde Mild YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSLONDON, England (CNN) -- Six ales were selected as finalists in this year's Great British Beer festival. Here Roger Protz, editor of the Good Beer Guide and one of the chief judges, gives his appraisal of the winners. The finalists are divided into categories depending on beer type. There are six categories, plus an overall winner. These are mild, bitter, best bitter, strong bitter, speciality and golden beer. MildMighty Oak Brewery Protz: A chocolaty character, almost a cappuccino quality. Dark, biscuity malt and hop resin, with 21 units of bitterness. There is a chocolate note in the final finish. It's a remarkably refreshing beer on a warm summer evening. BitterElgoods Brewery Protz: Copper colored beer with 30 units of bitterness. A spicy, rich, biscuity malt. Bitter but balanced by a rich sultana flavor. Best bitterHarveys Brewery Protz: Brewed for a Sussex palate using four different hop varieties, this has 38 units of bitterness. It's a resiny, floral, spicy hymn to the hop. It's all about sublime, classic English hop varieties. The maltiness is balanced by tart fruit and hoppiness, dry in the finish. Simply superb. Strong bitterYork Brewery Protz: A dark, almost claret color with a nice head and an almost jammy aroma. It has a hop resin character, an incredibly complex beer. A lot of fruitiness and maltiness. There's espresso coffee, raisins and a touch of blood orange. It doesn't finish up too sweet. It's what you call a sipping beer -- you couldn't quaff endless pints of it. Speciality beerCairngorm brewery Protz: Elderflower is added at the end of the copper boil to give this beer a distinctive flavor. It has a lager-ish quality about it, a gorgeous beautiful lemony aroma. A juicy malt and citrusy note from the German hops used. It's dry and bitter in the mouth, but has a malty sweetness. It is complex, but wonderful and refreshing too. Golden aleCrouch Vale Brewery Protz: This beer is named after a hop grown for the lager industry. It doesn't have an aggressive bitterness, it has lovely floral notes similar to lager. It has a lemon drop aroma to die for, balanced by juicy malt.
