YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Two car bombs exploded minutes apart in southern Baghdad, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 90 others, Iraqi police said. The cars were parked near a gas station and at a market when they exploded Thursday evening. The U.S. military also announced Thursday that five U.S. troops were killed the day before in separate attacks. The car bombings came hours after officials said an Iraqi woman was killed in a overnight battle between a radical militia and coalition forces. The woman's death is likely to inflame anti-U.S. sentiment. She was killed when U.S. soldiers battled early Thursday in Sadr City with the militia of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Sadr City, the largest Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad, was once the scene of pitched fighting between coalition troops and the militia, called the Mahdi Army. A U.S. military spokesman said coalition forces were attempting to capture a suspected target of terror group Ansar al-Sunna when they were attacked. Baghdad police said the woman was killed and five civilians were wounded during the fighting. The U.S. military could not confirm any casualties. News footage showed a hole in the roof of a house, scenes of rubble and pieces of rockets. One person claimed that the structure was hit by aircraft fire. Conditions in Sadr City, named for the cleric's late father, had been relatively stable since late 2004. Sadr and his followers had been participating in Iraqi politics. They are a strong presence in the Shiite-led United Iraqi Alliance coalition that won the most seats -- 128 -- in the December 15 parliamentary election. Sadr has often called for an end to the U.S. troop presence in Iraq. The five U.S. troops died in separate combat incidents on Wednesday, the U.S. military said. A roadside bomb killed three soldiers when the blast hit their vehicle south of Baghdad and a fourth soldier was shot to death in southwestern section of the capital. The military also announced that a Marine was killed near the western city of Falluja in the restive Anbar province. Since the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion, 2,247 U.S. troops have died in the Iraq war. Hussein trial adjournedAfter hearing from two witnesses on Thursday, the judges in the Saddam Hussein trial adjourned the proceedings until February 13. The defendants and their lawyers were not in the courtroom. Five defendants, including Hussein, continued their boycott of the trial and three others were barred from the proceedings. The chief judge said the three had caused "chaos" outside the courtroom, but did not elaborate. Hussein's legal team has accused the chief judge of bias. (Full story) Hussein, most of the defendants and their lawyers have boycotted the trial since Sunday. Bodies found of 14 shot in headThe bodies of 14 young men were found piled on top of one another in a hole in an industrial area, police in Baghdad said Thursday. Each one had been shot in the head and had his hands tied behind his back. They showed signs that they had been tortured as well. None of the young men had identification, police said. Police expect to find more bodies in Kasra wa Atash, an industrial area in the northern part of the city dotted with factories and car repair shops.
