Iraqi leader scraps alias
![]() Iraq's prime minister-designate, Nuri Kamil al-Maliki, has decided to use his real name, rather than an alias. BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's prime minister-designate has decided to use his real name, casting aside an alias he adopted during the rule of Saddam Hussein. He is Nuri Kamil al-Maliki, not Jawad al-Maliki. The Shiite politician adopted the name Jawad when he was in exile as a member of the resistance to the Hussein government. He said he did so to help shield his relatives in Iraq from government retaliation. During exile, al-Maliki spent a lot of time in Syria. Al-Maliki was named to the prime minister post on Saturday. He has a month to choose his ministers and present the list to parliament, acting parliament Speaker Adnan Pachachi said. If parliament votes in favor, the government will begin work. But if al-Maliki's Cabinet fails to gain support, someone else will be appointed to form a government, Pachachi said.
