JERUSALEM (CNN) -- The Israel Defense Forces re-entered northern Gaza late Saturday, Israeli military sources said.

The troops entered near the town of Beit Hanoun, The Associated Press reported.

Israeli forces carried out a two-day sweep of northern Gaza earlier this month, but the troops pulled out of three sections of Gaza as of Friday, AP reported.

The IDF said it withdrew its troops in central Gaza on Friday after completing "their activities in the area." Forces were to remain in southern Gaza.

Israel began military activity in Gaza on June 28, three days after Palestinian militants, including members of Hamas' military wing, came into Israel and killed two soldiers and captured Cpl. Gilad Shalit, 19.

Israel on Saturday launched a rocket attack on the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy building in Gaza City. Part of the building, in the Shaikh Radwan neighborhood, caught fire after the 1 a.m. blast, according to Palestinian security sources.

No injuries were reported.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that it targeted the building.

The attack came hours after Hamas militants, armed with rocket-propelled grenades, blew open a gate Friday on the border between Gaza and Egypt, allowing hundreds of people to cross the border. (Watch Hamas rally Palestinians in Gaza -- 2:37)

The crossing had been closed since the capture of Shalit on June 25.

An Egyptian military officer was wounded in the raid on the Rafah crossing, according to AP.

The militant groups holding Shalit have sought to swap him for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israel has refused, saying it would encourage more kidnappings.

On Wednesday, Israel experienced its second ground attack in three weeks when Lebanese-based Hezbollah guerillas came south across the border and killed three Israeli soldiers and kidnapped two others.

Hezbollah, too, has sought a prisoner exchange. Israel responded by shelling key targets across Lebanon, including airports, seaports, roads, bridges and Hezbollah offices.
