(CNN) -- When the first mass-produced hybrid car launched in 1997, it was heralded as the ideal compromise between modern convenience and environmental responsibility. A decade on, the cost of a hybrid is still higher than traditional cars of its class.

The cost continues to make it difficult for many to go green.
