Cause of Smith's death known, but kept mum

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) -- The cause of Anna Nicole Smith's death has been determined, but it will not be announced for one to two weeks to give police time to finish their investigation, the medical examiner's officer said Wednesday.

Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper wants to make sure none of the investigators' findings change any of his own findings, his office said.

Smith, 39, was pronounced dead February 8, after being found unconscious in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino near Hollywood, Florida.

A preliminary autopsy last month indicated that Smith did not appear to be a victim of foul play. (Full story)

The results of that autopsy showed no drugs in Smith's stomach, although prescription drugs were found in her hotel room.

There were no signs of blunt-force trauma, asphyxiation or other physical trauma, according to the preliminary autopsy. Perper said Smith had a small bruise on her back, which probably resulted from a fall in the bathtub earlier in the week.

Smith was buried Friday in the Bahamas, after a court battle over who would have custody of her body and where she would be buried. She was buried next to her son, Daniel, who died in September of what one pathologist said was a lethal combination of methadone and antidepressants. (Watch Smith's funeral )

The controversy over who fathered her 6-month-old daughter, Dannielynn, is ongoing.

Howard K. Stern, Smith's lawyer-turned-lover is named as the father on the baby's birth certificate. Larry Birkhead, a former boyfriend, filed a paternity suit in California before Smith's death. Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, has also said he could be the father.
