HAMILTON, New Zealand -- Sanath Jayasuriya became the most-capped player in the history of limited-overs cricket on Tuesday, even though the fifth one-day match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was abandoned because of rain. The 37-year-old Sri Lankan opener was credited with his 375th one-day appearance despite the abandonment, moving clear of India's Sachin Tendulkar with whom he was previously tied. New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden was also deemed to have officiated in his 100th limited-overs international, becoming the eighth umpire in cricket history to do so. He joins David Shepherd, Dave Orchard, Rudi Koertzen, Steve Bucknor, Daryl Harper, Darrell Hair and Steve Dunne. New Zealand won the toss and elected to field but the game could not get under way because of the incessant rain. The abandonment of the match left the series tied 2-2 and increased a deadlock between the teams in three series this season. Their two-test series was tied 1-1 and a two-match Twenty/20 series was also shared. New Zealand leave later this week for Australia, to participate in a limited-overs tri-series with the home nation and England. ![]() Jayasuriya has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's 374 one-day appearances. |
