SYDNEY, Australia -- England cricket team physiotherapist Dean Conway was robbed at knifepoint at a Sydney hotel on Tuesday, in an incident witnessed by five other team members. Conway was robbed of his wallet and mobile phone by four men wearing balaclavas who broke into the Radisson Plaza Hotel in the early hours of the morning. The knife-wielding men forced hotel staff to the ground, demanding money and the location of the safe, then robbed Conway, who was making a phone call. The other England team members present were batsman Andrew Strauss, batting coach Matthew Maynard, bowling coach Kevin Shine, analyst Mark Garaway and security officer Reg Dickason. They fled to another room when they saw the thieves break in. An England spokesman said:"Knives were produced and threats were made, but fortunately no-one was badly hurt. It all happened quite quickly, from all accounts, and it took everyone by surprise." The spokesman added: "Dean just happened to be in the thieves' line of sight. Thankfully he was not hurt." England team members had been celebrating their 2-0 series victory over Australia in the finals of the limited overs tri series. The players and staff were then returning to England on two different flights. ![]() Conway was making a phone call when the thieves burst in. |
