BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- Bangladesh secured a stunning pre-World Cup warm-up victory over New Zealand at the 3Ws Stadium on Tuesday. Set 227, the outsiders made it with two wickets in hand after tail-ender Mashrafe Mortaza blasted two successive sixes off James Franklin in the penultimate over. Bangladesh had looked behind the clock for most of their run-chase after Jacob Oram, nursing a broken finger, had battered 88 in the New Zealanders' 226 all out. They started in style with 17-year-old Tamim Iqbal tearing apart the Kiwi attack with a quickfire 46 from 48 balls including a huge six off Daniel Vettori. His fellow opener Javed Omar weighed in with 45 but after those two had departed the Bangladesh innings lacked momentum until the late assault from fast bowler Mortaza. He hit 30 from 14 balls including three sixes, one of which came off the bowling of New Zealand spearhead Shane Bond. Mortaza had also shone with the ball, claiming four for 44. Earlier, the hefty 28-year-old Oram had repaired the New Zealand innings at 75 for six when he and Brendon McCullum blasted a seventh-wicket 105-run partnership. India ease to comfortable winNetherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate's five-wickets heroics proved too little as India eased to a 182-run victory in their World Cup warm-up game in Jamaica. Skipper Rahul Dravid top-scored with 74 and Sachin Tendulkar made a fluent 61 and raised 116 runs together for the fourth wicket to guide India to 300 for nine on a slow pitch which helped the slow seam bowlers in the Dutch ranks. Indian slow bowlers then took over to strangle the Cup minnows for runs, dismissing them for 118 in 37.5 overs. Netherlands batsmen were out of depth on a slow pitch as Yuvraj Singh grabbed four for 12 with his occasional left arm spin. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh took two wickets apiece. South Africa-born Ten Doeschate stole the show in the morning to finish with figures of five for 57. Australia defeat ZimbabweWorld champions Australia used eight bowlers without managing to dismiss Zimbabwe in the first of their two World Cup warm-up matches in St Vincent. After Michael Clarke had scored 82 from 81 balls and Shane Watson 81 from 89 in Australia's 290 for seven, Zimbabwe reached 184 for seven to give Australia victory by 106 runs in the 13-a-side match. The Australians struggled to find their timing on a docile pitch which gave nothing to the faster bowlers. They reached 91 for no wicket but the middle-order then faltered with Ricky Ponting (2), Brad Hodge (17), Mike Hussey (15) and Brad Hogg (5) departing quickly. Clarke, who missed the 3-0 series defeat to New Zealand last month after injuring his hip, looked in fine touch, driving the ball crisply on both sides of the wicket. When Australia took the field, Shaun Tait was quick but erratic, opening the innings with two consecutive wides, while the rest of the Australia pace bowlers were economical but unpenetrative. Australia fielded only 12 men with opener Matthew Hayden and all-rounder Andrew Symonds still recovering from injuries. Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist was not considered for selection after delaying his arrival to the Caribbean until Monday because of the birth of his third child. He is scheduled to return to the side for Friday's match against England. ![]() Mortaza (left) blastes two successive sixes to give Bangladesh a shock win. |
