SEOUL, South Korea -- The South Korean city of Daegu patted itself on the back on Wednesday after it was selected as host of the 2011 world athletics championships. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) selected Daegu to host the event at a meeting in Kenya on Tuesday after a day of presentations and lobbying by candidates. The IAAF also announced Moscow would host the 2013 championships. "The people of Daegu city are proud and confident that they have achieved a very difficult task," said Shin Jeom-shik, secretary general of the city's bid commission. Shin also said Daegu's success could rub off on the country's other international bids. The mountain resort of Pyeongchang is bidding to host the 2014 Winter Olympics while the southern port city of Yeosu is aiming for the 2012 World Expo. "This will help Pyeongchang and Yeosu," Shin said by telephone. "This will raise South Korea's international status and increase its publicity." This year's world championships will be held in Osaka, Japan and then in Berlin in 2009. ![]() Daegu's delegates greet the announcement that their bid has been successful. |
