MELBOURNE, Australia -- Swimming Australia has said that it was unaware of a report that Ian Thorpe tested positive for the banned male sex hormone testosterone before his retirement last year. The claim was made in an item posted on the Web site of French sports daily L'Equipe. The report said that the five-times Olympic champion showed "abnormal levels" of testosterone and another hormone in May 2006. L'Equipe added that the Australian Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA) decided to close the file because they did not have sufficient "scientific certitude." But the report said that the International Swimming Federation (FINA) had disagreed and launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The CAS were not available for comment. A Swimming Australia spokesman said he was "not aware" of the story. Thorpe, one of the sport's all-time greats, retired last November at the age of 24, passing up the chance to become the first man to win swimming gold at three Olympics. ![]() Thorpe retired last November at the age of 24. |
