BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- World number one Justine Henin eased into the third round of the German Open on Wednesday with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Germany's Tatjana Malek, while Amelie Mauresmo returned from illness to beat China's Yan Zi 6-3 6-3.

Henin, the top seed and a three-times winner in Berlin, had too much power for her 19-year-old opponent and broke the German seven times to secure victory in just over an hour.

"It was not easy, tough conditions and a windy court, but I am happy to be in the next round," Henin said.

Wimbledon champion Mauresmo, seeded second, was scarcely more taxed as she won her first competitive match since having her appendix removed, beating her Chinese challenger in one hour 23 minutes.

Martina Hingis had to show more grit to beat Katerina Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-5 7-6.

Hingis, the fourth seed, fought her way back from an early break to edge the first set and she had to get out of further trouble in the second.

Paid the price

The Swiss former world number one held her nerve serving at 4-5 and 5-6 in the second and had to save two set-points in the resulting tiebreak, the powerful but erratic Bondarenko paying the price for a wild forehand approach on the second of them.

"That was quite difficult today," Hingis said. "I've been suffering from some nagging injuries so I haven't been able to practise a hundred percent.

"Thankfully my experience and patience saved me."

In earlier matches on Wednesday in the $1.34 million, claycourt event, defending champion and seventh seed Nadia Petrova of Russia reached the third round with a 6-4 6-2 win over France's Severine Bremond.

Petrova's compatriot Elena Dementieva fought back from a set down for the second day running, the 10th seed beating Meghann Shaughnessy of the U.S. 5-7 6-3 6-1 to make the third round.

Serbian number 12 seed Ana Ivanovic had a comfortable 6-3 6-2 victory over Elena Likhovtseva of Russia.

Czech qualifier Zuzana Ondraskova shocked 11th seed Daniela Hantuchova in their rain-delayed first round match, upsetting the Slovakian 6-1 6-3.

Hantuchova, winner at Indian Wells in March, was broken six times by the 27-year-old Ondraskova, who is ranked more than 100 places below her.
