BOSA, Sardinia -- Robbie McEwen won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish Sunday, and Danilo Di Luca took the leader's pink jersey from teammate Enrico Gasparotto. McEwen won the 205-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Tempio Pausania to Bosa in an unofficial time of 5 hours, 7 minutes, 13 seconds. Olympic and world champion Paolo Bettini finished second and Alessandro Petacchi was third, each with the same time as McEwen, an Australian with the Predictor-Lotto team. Several riders were involved in a crash just before the final kilometer (mile). Gasparotto, who took the lead when his Liquigas squad won the team trial that opened the race Saturday, was slowed by the crash, giving up his advantage to Di Luca. Di Luca is the leader of the Liquigas team and was upset that Gasparotto did not slow to let him finish first in the team time trial. Monday's flat third stage of 181 kilometers (112.5 miles) goes from Barumini to Cagliari. Tuesday is a rest day as the race heads to Salerno and mainland Italy for the fourth stage on Wednesday ![]() McEwen took the stage in 5 hours 7 minutes and 13 seconds. |
