ORDINO-ARCALIS, Spain -- Russian Denis Menchov retained his overall lead in the Tour of Spain after winning the 214km 10th stage on Monday between Benasque and the ski station of Ordino-Arcalis.

Menchov pips Evans to the line to take the honors at the summit of the ski station at Ordino-Arcalis.
The Rabobank rider -- the 2005 winner -- claimed his first stage of this year's race on the 2,200 meter summit finish, crossing the line just ahead of overall rivals Cadel Evans, Samuel Sanchez, Carlos Sastre and compatriot Vladimir Efimkin.
Menchov, who managed to repel the continued attacks of Sastre during the mountainous stage, maintains his overall lead of two minutes and one second over Efimkin.
Evans is 2:27 back in third place with Sastre fourth at 3:02.
Oscar Freire, winner of three stages during the race, withdrew from the race on Monday.
Freire, who did not contest the 10th stage, had earlier indicated he would withdraw from the race to prepare for the world championships in Stuttgart from September 25 to 30.
Tuesday is a rest day with the peloton back in action on Wednesday with a 191km ride from the beach town of Oropesa del Mar to Algemesi. E-mail to a friend ![]()
