Hingis, seeded fifth on her first appearance at the tournament in Beijing, needed just under an hour to beat the world number 142.

In other action on Tuesday, Japan's Akiko Morigami upset Spanish seventh seed Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-4.

The top four seeds, including defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, all received first-round byes.

World number one and U.S. Open champion Justine Henin pulled out of the tournament with a bronchial infection, promoting Jelena Jankovic of Serbia to second seed. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
