Sanchez had already taken the 15th and 19th stages.

Russia's Menchov goes into Sunday's final leg of the race three minutes 31 seconds clear of Spaniard Carlos Sastre in the overall rankings.

Menchov was awarded the 2005 title when Roberto Heras was disqualified for doping.

Sanchez's victory lifted him to third overall, with Australian Cadel Evans dropping to fourth after coming home sixth on the stage, 19 seconds adrift of the winner.

It was a third stage success for Sanchez, following the 15th in the mountains and Friday's 19th.

"The objective in this race was the podium," Sanchez said. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
