PARIS, France -- Argentina midfielder Marcelo Gallardo has joined Paris St Germain from River Plate, the Ligue 1 club said on Monday.

The 30-year-old Gallardo, who knows the French league well having played for Monaco from 1999 to 2003, signed for two-and-a-half years for an undisclosed fee.

PSG hope Gallardo's skills can help them bounce back from a disastrous first half of the season.

The capital club lie 16th in the 20-strong table and their season has been tainted by hooliganism.

A PSG fan was shot dead by a policeman in November after an outburst of violence following a UEFA Cup tie against Israeli team Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Gallardo played in the French League with Monaco from 1999-2003.
