LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia will be sidelined for the rest of the season after rupturing knee ligaments in the midweek cup defeat against Arsenal.

"Unfortunately we expect to be without Luis for six months," club spokesman Ian Cotton said on Liverpool's Web site on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was carried off on a stretcher during Tuesday's 6-3 Carling Cup defeat to Arsenal and a scan confirmed he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Chilean midfielder Mark Gonzalez also faces up to three weeks on the sidelines with the shin injury he suffered in the match.

An X-ray after the game confirmed there was no break but a scan on Wednesday showed severe soft tissue bruising and bruising to the bone of his right shin.

Keeper move

Liverpool are close to signing a new backup goalkeeper to first choice Jose Reina.

Sampdoria's Daniele Padelli is set to join the Premier League club on loan, the Genoa-based club said on Wedneday.

The move comes a day after current number two Jerzy Dudek conceded six more goals as Liverpool suffered a humiliating 6-3 defeat to Arsenal in their League Cup quarterfinal.

Dudek was beaten three times by Arsenal's strikers as they exited the FA Cup on Saturday and was widely blamed for two of the goals.

Padelli has played six times for Italy's under-21 team.

The 21-year-old Padelli was recalled by Sampdoria after making only one appearance on loan with second-flight Crotone in the first half of this season.

Last season, he was the starter for third-division Pizzighettone. Padelli has never played in Serie A.
