MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid were dumped out of the King's Cup by Primera Liga strugglers Real Betis on the away goals rule after they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu on Thursday. Real got off to a flying start when Brazilian forward Robinho gave them the lead with a deflected shot after just five minutes. But they failed to press home their advantage and Betis equalised when striker Dani headed in at the far post after some good work from Francisco Maldonado. Without the out-of-favor David Beckham, Ronaldo and Antonio Cassano left out of the squad by coach Fabio Capello, Real lacked the firepower up front to breach the Betis defence again. Betis, who won the Cup in 2005, will face current Primera Liga leaders Sevilla in the quarterfinals, which were drawn on Friday. Barcelona meet Real Zaragoza while second division Valladolid face Deportivo Coruna. The other tie is between Getafe and Osasuna. The first legs will be played on January 31 with the returns on February 28. ![]() Robinho celebrates his goal but Madrid still slumped out of the King's Cup. |
