MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany -- Borussia Moenchengladbach coach Jupp Heynckes has resigned a day after a 0-0 draw against visiting Nuremberg, which extended their winless run to 13 games.

The draw left the team third from bottom in the Bundesliga and in the relegation zone.

Heynckes, 61, came to the club where he had a successful playing career as a striker, last year. After four home victories this season the club went into a downward spiral.

"We all regret this move very much," Moenchengladbach president Rolf Koenigs said in a statement announcing the decision. "He'll always be a Borussia man."

During the winter break, Moenchengladbach brought in assistant coach Jos Luhukay, who will now take over as interim head coach.

Heynckes, who was born in Moenchengladbach, helped the team to win four national championships, one cup and the UEFA Cup during his playing days.

He was also in the German national team which won the European Championship in 1972 and World Cup two years later.

His 220 goals in the Bundesliga are the third highest haul in history, behind Gerd Muller's 365 and Klaus Fischer's 268.

He had a spell with Hannover 96 between two periods at Moenchengladbach, where he started his coaching career with an eight-year stint.

League title

He was in charge of Bayern Munich between 1987 and 1991, guiding them to the league title in 1989 and 1990.

He then coached Eintracht Frankfurt, Tenerife, Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, who won the Champions League under his guidance in 1998.

Lack of success in the Primera Liga led to his departure and he moved on to Benfica and back to Bilbao before returning to Germany with Schalke.

He began his second stint as Moenchengladbach coach in May 2006.

He won a fight against relegation and the club had a good start to the current campaign but they have not won in the league since a 3-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on October 14.

At that stage they were fifth in the standings, just a point behind the leaders.
