Van Nistelrooy scored 25 league goals as Real won the Primera Liga title last season.

The 31-year-old international, now in his second season at Real, has a contract until the end of the season with an option for an extra year.

It is expected that Real sporting director Predrag Mijatovic will offer the extension to van Nistelrooy who scored 25 league goals when Real won the title last season, after he joined them from Manchester United.

AS adds that Nistelrooy's Dutch international team mate, midfielder Wesley Sneijder, is struggling to fit in in Madrid and will have therapy to try to rediscover his confidence.

The 23-year-old joined Real in the summer from Ajax and was impressive early in the season but has since lost his form. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
