NICOSIA, Cyprus -- Wales coach John Toshack was left questioning his future in the job after a bitterly disappointing 3-1 Euro 2008 defeat by Cyprus in Nicosia.

Toshack said he would be taking a long hard look at himself after this poor display.

After a 5-2 win in Slovakia had raised confidence and had Toshack contemplating a third-place finish in the group, Wales wasted a half-time lead and slumped to a depressing loss.

"I will have to have a long hard look at myself and what I am doing here," declared Toshack.

"After what I have seen in this match I am obviously doing something wrong."

James Collins gave Wales a 21st minute lead but the Cypriots swept them aside after the break with goals from Yiannis Okkas (59, 68 minutes) and Konstantinos Charalampidis (79).

"I was bitterly disappointed by this performance and want to apologize to our fans who made the trip out here to watch this debacle.

Germany booked their place in next year's finals with a 0-0 draw away to the Republic of Ireland.

They relied heavily on goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, returning from a monthlong injury break, who repeatedly denied the Irish in the second half.

The German defense cleared two Irish corners in the final seconds of injury time.

Germany, without injured stars Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack, rarely threatened but were always going to be happy with the point they needed.
