DUBLIN, Ireland -- The Football Association of Ireland will hold an emergency board meeting this week to "assess the current situation" of the national team, with national coach Steve Staunton reportedly close to losing his job.

Steve Staunton is under pressure to keep his job after failing to guide Ireland to the Euro 2008 finals.
An unscheduled meeting will be held at some point before the weekend where members will consider Staunton's future.
Staunton has been under increasing pressure recently, culminating in the failure to beat Cyprus at home last week in a game which finished 1-1 -- resulting in them not qualifying for Euro 2008.
Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle admits he fears for the future of Staunton. "I don't know what is happening to be honest.
"From what I hear it doesn't look good, we will just have to wait and see. Steve is determined to see it out and stick it through until the World Cup qualifying campaign."
Staunton has won only six of his 17 matches in charge of the Republic since taking over the position from Brian Kerr exactly two years ago. E-mail to a friend ![]()
