ROME, Italy -- Serie A strugglers Cagliari have reappointed the experienced Nedo Sonetti as their head coach after parting company with Marco Giampaolo.

The 66-year-old is back for a third spell in charge of the club, following stints in 2001/02 and 2005/06, and is thought to have signed a contract until 2009.

He replaces Giampaolo, 40, who was sacked for a second time by the Sardinian club earlier on Tuesday.

Cagliari currently occupy 17th place in the 20-team Serie A table, with only nine points from 11 matches.

During a long career, Sonetti has been coach of Atalanta, Lecce, Torino, Ancona and Ascoli in Serie A. He was at Ascoli last season and will return against AC Milan on November 25. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
