SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Luis Fabiano scored twice as Brazil came from behind to beat Uruguay 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday night.

Fabiano came to Brazil's rescue with goals either side of half-time in their 2-1 win over Uruguay.

Coming off a 1-1 draw in Peru on Sunday, Brazil fell behind before a capacity crowd of 65,000 at Morumbi Stadium when Sebastian Abreu headed in a cross in the eighth minute.

Fabiano equalized in the 44th minute when his shot squirmed under the legs of goalkeeper Fabian Carini.

He grabbed the winner the 65th minute, latching on to a mis-hit shot by Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva to shoot firmly past Carini.

The win lifts South American champions Brazil into a tie for third in the qualifying group, but coach Dunga was unhappy with their display.

"We couldn't even connect our passes. We didn't play well -- especially in the first period -- but we certainly will improve.

"In the second period we tightened our marking and played like we did in the Copa America," he added.

Paraguay, with three wins and a draw from their four games, top the standings after their 3-0 victory over Chile on Wednesday.

Argentina, surprisingly beaten by Colombia on Tuesday, are a point behind with Colombia and Brazil on eight points. The top four qualify automatically with the fifth team going into a play-off. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
